The Bahamas is a part of the group called Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI). And as such,  to travel to this country from the United States you will need a US passport book, or your passport card. Either of these two documents will suffice. However, unlike some other WHTI sites, your State-issued enhanced driver’s license is not accepted in this destination. You are not also required to apply for a visa to travel to the Bahamas.

Using a US passport card will enable you to enter the Bahamas. First issued on July 14, 2008, this card is the cheaper and more convenient way of having an official travel document to this destination and the other WHTI member areas. Processing periods for this card is similar to the processing of regular passport books, so make sure you apply for this card way ahead of your travel date. Currently, it takes four to six weeks to complete the routine passport processing, and two to three weeks for the expedited passport option.

If you’re after flexibility, however, get yourself a US passport book. Unlike the passport card, which you can only use in WHTI areas, you can use your passport book for any destination practically anywhere in the world. It is a little pricier than the card counterpart, but makes up for it with its wide range of uses. If you’re a backpacker or a frequent traveler, the passport book is the option for you.

The reason we’re saying this is that the passport card is somewhat limited in its travel use. You can only use the passport card when you’re traveling to WHTI destinations either by sea or by land. But don’t worry, as you can apply for both types of passports in order to have the best of both worlds: the convenience and affordability of passport cards, and the flexibility of passport books. What’s more, you can get a huge discount if you apply for both types of passports.

Aside from the passport, the government at the Bahamas may require additional documents for your entry. To confirm whether you need additional documents, checking with their Embassy in the US is recommended. Do this before you leave for the Bahamas.

When you finally arrive at the Bahamas, make it a point to register with the nearest US Embassy or Consulate immediately. The reason for this is that the Embassy will find it easier to assist you whenever you need something if you are registered. Aside from that, they will also provide you with important travel and safety information once you arrive.

As you will need a passport application to visit the Bahamas, make sure you visit your nearest US passport office immediately. They will provide you with more information on what you need to visit the Bahamas. They will also help you apply for a passport so you can visit the Bahamas’ finest beaches as soon as possible.
