Typically, a getting a passport is something that eats up quite a bit of time and then involves waiting around until the processing agency pulls your file. Normally, this will take about 2 months for someone that has to get a new passport. However, there are times when waiting that long will simply not do and a 24 hour passport is needed.

Most people will not ever need to get a 24 hour passport, but unexpected situations may arise that cause for rush processing. If an emergency situation happens for someone that has never had a passport, they better get ready to do some running. It is best to have everything together that is needed the moment that they walk into the passport office.
In most cases, the State Department will only offer 24 hour service to someone that is having a family emergency overseas and it is necessary for them to travel right away. Things like an immediate family member falling deathly ill, someone dying, an accident or something of that nature. When this situation does arise, they do have steps in place to try and accommodate people.
It is also worthy to note that the local passport office is not the only place to turn when this happens. There are also private agencies that can help with these services as they are already tapped in for situations just like this. Keep in mind that they will have significant fees over and above what the government would charge, and they can be quite expensive if rush service is needed.
Obviously, it is much easier to obtain a passport renewal in twenty-four hours than it is to obtain a new passport. Sometimes passport renewals can be done electronically, or temporary emergency renewals may be granted via the Internet. Emergency applicants that only need a passport renewal often stand a very good chance of having their request granted in a timely fashion.
New passport applicants face a much more challenging road than passport renewal applicants. Because everything has to be done in person, it can make the while process a bit more difficult. For those that live in small towns, they may have to travel hundreds of miles to a passport office that can provide the services that they need.
Even though most agencies require an appointment, they will make exceptions for emergency situations. Still, it is important to show up as early as possible. The earlier an applicant shows up, the more likely it is that he or she will get the passport that day. Or those that do not live near an agency, many private passport-expediting services offer 24 hour passport service. It is best to stick with well-established providers to ensure results.
Getting a 24 hour U.S. passport can be difficult, but it is not an impossible task. As long as the situation meets the government requirements, they will do everything that they can in order to make this happen for everyone. This is food for thought though in that even if you never plan on leaving the country, it is always smart move to get a new passport because you just never know when it will be needed.
