Built during the 1st century Anno Domini by an unknown architect during the reign of Hadrian, the present structure was potentially originally built as a temple for all the pagan gods. We do hear of it as being a law-court and a reception area for emperor Hadrian meeting his quests too. Some say that the rotunda of the building was a Roman bath. Due to all this mystery, the Pantheon is often referred to as the Sphinx of Rome. The visitor will probably not appreciate the construction as much as the Flavian amphitheater, but it still is a great masterwork of engineering and well worth a visit.
Most Roman and Greek churches at the time of the Pantheon’s construction were large, colonnaded, rectangular enclosures with sanctuaries situated in their centres. The Pantheon was changed. It was to consist of a big circular drum topped with a hemispherical dome. It’s a masterwork of both engineering and art a lasting memory of ancient Romes might. Work finished on the Pantheon in the 1st century ad. Neither the precise date of completion, nor the architect is understood. After Romes conversion to Catholicism, the Pantheon was made a Catholic Church. This didnt stop the Byzantine emperor, in a three-day visit to Rome, from claiming the Pantheons bronze steered roof tiles as his own. Today, the Pantheon is the best saved of all Romes ancient buildings. Services are still held inside it. You already know everything about Rome, you can book an appartement de luxe paris
The right way to explain the composition of the Pantheon would be for me to take you through some pictures of the structure :
The picture at the top of the page is of the Pantheon as seen from the outside. The portico which fronts the building is what remains of the first church of Agrippa. The portico has 3 rows of 8 pillars. The pillars are about fourteen meters high. Note the way in which the dome isnt very apparent. The Pantheon was built to emphasise the inside of the dome and not the outside, although the once bronze gilded roof tiles of the dome might have stood out a bit.
